Dad: Yeah son, our money budget is kind of low right now.
Shawn: But it’s almost my sixteenth birthday and I’ve been looking forward to this for a while now.
Mom: I know honey but we can’t pay for it right now. Maybe we can do this next year.
Shawn: But when Jessica asked when she was sixteen, she got to do it.
Jessica: Don’t bring me into this.
Mom: But that was when the economy wasn’t so bad like it is now,
Shawn: But my grades are good, I’m doing well at football, I’m hanging out with the right crowd, I’m not getting into any trouble and most importantly I’m going to be sixteen.
Dad: Well he has some good points there honey; he is doing well in school and football.
Jessica: Dad is that all you care about is Shawn and football?
Dad: No, but you have to admit that he is pretty good.
Mom: (Whispering) don’t encourage him.
Shawn: Please mom? I promise I won’t ask you for anything else.
Mom: No! This discussion is over; I don’t want to hear no more about it and that’s final!
Shawn: See!! You always do this to me. Every time I ask for something you always shoot it down. You never let me do anything I want to do! (Shawn storms out of the kitchen).
Mom: (she sighs) do you think I made the right decision? I never like to see him mad at me.
Jessica: Oh mom, don’t give in to that. He just does that to get what he wants.
Dad: You want me to go talk to him?
Mom: No. I will handle this.
Mom: (she goes into Shawn’s room to see if he is ok). Shawn? Are you okay?
Shawn: Leave me alone.
Mom: I know you’re mad but we can’t afford it right now.
Shawn: Why? Is it because I want it?
Mom: No. It’s because you’re growing up too fast. I don’t want to let you go. It seems like yesterday I was just holding you in my arms after you were born. You were my little soldier when you were little. It’s so hard to let your kids grow up into adults/
Shawn: Mom; I will always be your soldier no matter how old I get. I did kind of over react in the kitchen and I’m sorry.
Mom: It’s okay honey. On your birthday I am taking you to driver’s training.
Shawn: Don’t worry about it. It’s not that important any way (Shawn runs up and gives his mom a big hug after he says that). I love you mom.
Mom: I love you too Shawn. (She kisses him on the forehead and they go back in the kitchen).
